Rockets Dominate Clippers in NBA Cup Opener
HOUSTON — The Houston Rockets showcased their dominance on Friday night, delivering a convincing 125-104 victory over the Los Angeles Clippers in the NBA Cup Group Play opener. Jabari Smith Jr. led the charge for Houston, scoring a season-high 28 points, including five 3-pointers, as the Rockets never trailed throughout the game. This win marked Houston’s fourth consecutive victory and a repeat performance after defeating the Clippers 111-103 just two days prior.
Alperen Sengun contributed significantly, achieving a triple-double with 16 points, 10 rebounds, and 10 assists. His impactful presence was complemented by Fred VanVleet, who added 18 points and 10 assists, while Dillon Brooks chipped in with 17 points. Off the bench, Tari Eason and Amen Thompson provided a dynamic spark, combining for 29 points.
The Clippers, lacking their usual energy, suffered their third consecutive loss, managing only a 37.8% shooting percentage from the field and just 25% from beyond the arc (10-for-40). James Harden led the Clippers with 21 points, making three 3-pointers to tie Ray Allen for second on the NBA’s all-time list, yet he was sidelined for the fourth quarter with Houston leading comfortably.
Kevin Porter Jr. and Kris Dunn supplemented the scoring with 15 and 13 points, respectively, but the team struggled to find its rhythm after a promising four-game winning streak.
Looking ahead, the Clippers will host the Utah Jazz on Sunday at 6 p.m., as they seek to regain their form while awaiting the return of All-Star forward Kawhi Leonard from injury.
