2028 LA Olympics Unfazed by Political Landscape
LOS ANGELES — Organizers of the upcoming 2028 Olympic Games in Los Angeles are confident that the election of Donald Trump as president will not hinder the event’s funding. With a robust budget of $6.9 billion sourced from television rights, corporate sponsorships, and ticket sales, LA28 officials expect federal support to cover an additional $1-2 billion for security, designated as a National Special Security Event.
Casey Wasserman, chairman of LA28, noted that his organization has thrived under various administrations, emphasizing the importance of cooperation for successful event execution. Wasserman, a prominent Democratic donor, stated that prior outreach from both Trump and Biden’s campaign teams demonstrated a commitment to seamless collaboration across political lines. Notably, Trump was president when Los Angeles secured hosting rights in 2017, signing key federal documents ensuring security and transportation.
In meetings with the International Olympic Committee (IOC) Coordination Commission, LA28 officials reviewed progress on venues and plans for the games, with key visits to landmarks including the Rose Bowl and the Long Beach Convention Center. Nicole Hoevertsz, head of the IOC commission, lauded Los Angeles’s potential to deliver an exceptional Olympic experience rooted in the city’s vibrant culture and community spirit.
The competition schedule, potentially including cricket on the East Coast, is expected to be finalized by next summer. Notably, venues have been chose to ensure that the Games align with community needs, avoiding past mistakes of forcing city adaptations.
LA28’s next milestone includes moving into its new headquarters this spring, with public engagement activities such as ticket sales and the torch relay planned for 2026. Wasserman expressed enthusiasm for the upcoming Games during a recent news conference at UCLA, reinforcing the organization’s commitment to hosting a memorable Olympic event.
