USC Triumphs Over UT Arlington in Nail-Biter, 98-95
LOS ANGELES — In a thrilling showdown at the Galen Center, Desmond Claude’s clutch performance led the University of Southern California (USC) to a narrow 98-95 victory over UT Arlington (UTA) on Wednesday night. Claude scored a game-high 26 points, showcasing his ability to deliver in critical moments with key baskets in the closing seconds.
The game saw intense back-and-forth action, with UTA mounting a significant comeback in the second half. The Mavericks executed a 23-11 run, taking their first lead of the half at 69-68. This surge was highlighted by strong contributions from Kade Douglas and Jaxon Ellingsworth, but USC countered with a layup from Terrance Williams II and a spectacular dunk from Kevin Patton Jr., reclaiming the lead at 72-69.
As the clock wound down, Claude secured a substantial advantage for USC with a layup and jumper, pushing the score to 94-90 with just 19 seconds remaining. Although UTA’s Ellingsworth responded with a three-pointer to cut the deficit, four successful free throws by Williams II and Saint Thomas sealed the Trojans’ victory.
Alongside Claude, USC also saw impressive performances from Josh Cohen, who scored 19 points, and Williams with 18. UTA’s Jaden Wells led his team with 27 points, hitting seven three-pointers, while Ellingsworth added 19 points, contributing to the Mavericks shooting an impressive 67% from beyond the arc.
This matchup marked the first meeting between the two teams. USC remains undefeated at 3-0 as they prepare to host Cal on Sunday at 6:30 p.m.
