Trump has appointed Musk and Ramaswamy to head an advisory board tasked with suggesting spending cuts and restructuring federal agencies. They have proposed mass layoffs and deep cuts to federal programs, as well as eliminating grant money to nonprofit organizations that they see as government-funded entities.
The commission, known as DOGE, has received a large number of applications and suggestions for spending cuts on X. The commission has stressed the need for full-time staff rather than part-time idea generators. Despite the commission’s unconventional approach and controversial proposals, Musk and Ramaswamy believe that their efforts will ultimately benefit the country. The commission has a deadline of July 4, 2026, to complete its work, but it will only become an official federal department if Congress passes a law to create it. Musk has also called for changes in federal contracting practices, particularly in relation to his company, SpaceX.
