Press Release: Community Rallies for Victims of Tragic Street Racing Incident in Van Nuys
VAN NUYS — A fundraising campaign is underway to support two young men, both 22 years old, who were critically injured during a devastating car crash linked to an alleged street race in Van Nuys, which resulted in one of the men’s death. The Los Angeles Police Department reported that the incident occurred Friday night at approximately 9:50 p.m. when a speeding Mercedes-Benz GT63 collided with a Honda Civic in the eastbound lane. That Honda was making a left turn into a parking lot when struck.
The high-speed chase involved a Rolls-Royce Cullinan, which swerved to evade the Honda and ended up hitting a Chevrolet Traverse. The driver of the Rolls-Royce fled the scene on foot after the crash. Meanwhile, the Mercedes driver, who sustained minor injuries, was later arrested on suspicion of reckless driving.
The victims, identified as Rangel Vega and Alejandro Luquin—friends and devoted volunteers at La Iglesia en el Camino—were rushed to local hospitals, where Vega tragically succumbed to his injuries Saturday night. Luquin remains hospitalized with severe injuries, including multiple broken bones, as he faces a challenging recovery process. His sister, Mayra Luquin, shared the emotional toll on her brother, who is unaware of Vega’s passing and continues to ask for his friend.
Pastor John Miranda expressed the profound grief within the community, stating, “The community is weeping for this loss.” Supporters are encouraged to assist by donating through a GoFundMe page established for the families involved. The LAPD’s Valley Traffic Division is seeking information regarding the incident, urging witnesses to come forward.
