San Pedro to Host Croatia House for 2028 Olympic Games
San Pedro is set to welcome a vibrant cultural hub known as the Croatia House during the 2028 Olympic and Paralympic Games in Los Angeles, as announced by Councilmember Tim McOsker on November 13. The agreement was solidified with Zlatko Matesa, President of the National Olympic Committee of Croatia, during McOsker’s visit to Zagreb, marking a formal commitment to celebrating Croatian culture within the Los Angeles port community.
The Croatia House will serve as one of the Olympic Houses — hospitality and cultural venues established by participating nations in host cities. Designed as gathering places for national teams, fans, and local residents, these venues will offer an array of activities such as live event broadcasts, athlete meet-and-greets, and traditional food, allowing visitors to immerse themselves in Croatian heritage.
“San Pedro has a proud Croatian community that has helped shape the spirit and culture of Los Angeles,” McOsker stated. The initiative aims to bring together Croatian visitors, athletes, dignitaries, and the local community, highlighting the bonds between San Pedro and Croatia. The area is home to one of the largest Croatian diasporas outside of Croatia, with over 30,000 residents of Croatian descent.
County Supervisor Janice Hahn and U.S. Ambassador to Croatia Nathalie Reyes witnessed the signing of the agreement, emphasizing the deep ties between the two communities. Hahn praised McOsker for securing the deal, noting the familiarity Croatian officials have with San Pedro’s vibrant Croatian American community.
The four-year agreement outlines responsibilities, costs, and flexibility for the project, while also allowing for personnel exchanges and training in cultural and Olympic hospitality. “Croatia House will be a home away from home in San Pedro,” Reyes stated, expressing excitement about welcoming the global community to experience the essence of Croatia in Los Angeles.
