Valley Indian Seniors Association Celebrates Diwali in Chatsworth

Chatsworth, CA — The Valley Indian Seniors Association (VISA) recently hosted a vibrant Diwali celebration, bringing together nearly 100 seniors from the community to partake in traditional festivities. The event, held on November 9, 2024, featured an array of cultural highlights including traditional attire, dance performances, and an assortment of festive foods.

Diwali, known as the festival of lights, symbolizes the triumph of good over evil and marks the start of the Hindu new year. Vice President Sunita Batra described the festival’s significance, likening it to Christmas, with families coming together to celebrate and pray. "It’s a joyful occasion where we change our clothes and enjoy each other’s company," she noted.

Monica Sarin, a local dance instructor, led attendees in celebratory dances, exemplifying the joy and togetherness that this holiday brings. According to Nishtha Raheja Goel, president of VISA, the organization regularly hosts events that focus on the health and social needs of seniors, integrating cultural celebrations like Diwali to enhance community bonds.

Los Angeles City Councilmember Nithya Raman, the city’s first elected South Asian official, attended the event, recognizing VISA’s efforts with certificates in appreciation. "This organization plays a crucial role in connecting our community through shared culture and values," she expressed.

Volunteers emphasized the importance of combating loneliness among seniors, a common issue within the immigrant population. Anisha Judge highlighted the unique challenges faced by Indian seniors, including language barriers and cultural isolation.

VISA’s gatherings not only celebrate cultural heritage but also create a much-needed space for socialization, underscoring the significance of community in the lives of senior citizens. The evening fostered connections, joy, and a deeper appreciation for the cultures that enrich Los Angeles.
