Police who defended Capitol on Jan. 6 support Harris for securing location of Trump’s rally

Officer Daniel Hodges, who fought off the pro-Trump mob on Jan. 6, 2021, was pleased that Kamala Harris chose to host a rally at the same spot where Trump incited his supporters to violence. Hodges, now an opponent of Trump, appreciated the opportunity to contrast the events of Jan. 6 with Harris’ message. He found the rally less eventful than his traumatic experience on Jan. 6 but noted the importance of moving forward. Harris referenced the officers injured in the attack during her speech and was supported by Craig Sicknick, the brother of a Capitol Police officer who died after the riot. Sicknick praised Harris as a real leader and criticized Trump’s pardon promises for the convicted criminals involved in the attack. Former U.S. Capitol Police Sgt. Aquilino Gonell, who was assaulted during the attack, also attended the rally and expressed emotional gratitude for the positive and hopeful tone of Harris’ speech. Gonell, who has campaigned for Harris, emphasized the importance of rejecting political violence and hoping for a better future. The rally served as a powerful reminder of the events of Jan. 6 and the need to choose leadership that prioritizes unity and democracy over chaos and hate.
