The Ducks’ power play came to life as they beat the New York Islanders 3-1 on Tuesday night, with Leo Carlsson and Troy Terry scoring power-play goals. Lukas Dostal made 41 saves in the victory. Mason McTavish had two assists, and Frank Vatrano added an empty-net goal for the Ducks. Mathew Barzal scored for the Islanders, with Ilya Sorokin making 19 saves. It was the Islanders’ third loss in their last four games.
Carlsson opened the scoring in the first period, Terry scored his 100th NHL goal on the power play, and Barzal scored for the Islanders to make it a one-goal game. The Ducks got their first win of a four-game road trip and will have a six-game homestand after facing Pittsburgh. Dostal made a key save late in the second period on Anders Lee to preserve the Ducks’ lead.
Islanders forward Pierre Engvall struggled, taking two penalties in the game. Engvall, who signed a seven-year contract, is having trouble earning a consistent spot on the roster and was sent to the AHL to start the season. The Islanders’ penalty kill unit allowed two goals, ranking 30th in the league.
The Ducks will face the Pittsburgh Penguins next, while the Islanders will play the Columbus Blue Jackets. The win for the Ducks is a positive sign as they continue their road trip and look ahead to their upcoming homestand.
