Former Brazilian au pair reaches plea deal, agrees to cooperate in Virginia double-murder case involving previous employer

Juliana Peres Magalhaes, a Brazilian au pair, pleaded guilty to manslaughter in a Virginia double-murder case involving her former boss, Brendan Banfield. Banfield is accused of killing Joseph Ryan and his wife, Christine Banfield. Peres Magalhaes cooperated with prosecutors and faces up to 10 years in prison. Brendan Banfield’s trial is set for February, where he faces four counts of aggravated murder. The plea deal cannot be fully disclosed due to the upcoming trial against Banfield. The incident occurred when Peres Magalhaes called 911 reporting a friend was hurt, and Banfield claimed he shot an intruder in his home. However, evidence found no forced entry, leading to suspicion of foul play. Prosecutors believe Peres Magalhaes and Banfield had an affair and conspired to kill his wife to be together. It was alleged that they lured Ryan to the Banfields’ home where he was killed. Peres Magalhaes confessed to shooting Ryan at Banfield’s instruction after his initial shot failed to kill Ryan. Banfield had purchased a gun from a shooting range prior to the murders, indicating premeditation. The plea deal reduced Peres Magalhaes’ charges from second-degree murder to manslaughter and dropped the firearm charge. Banfield is yet to comment on the plea deal.
