First traces of snow spotted on local mountains, more to come this weekend – Daily News

Local mountains received their first snowfall of the season on Tuesday, Oct. 29, as a cold system passed through the region, leaving a light dusting of snow on the slopes. Ski resorts, such as Mountain High and Big Bear Mountain Resort, shared photos of the snowfall, with more expected by the weekend. Mammoth Mountain resort also saw snow, with snow guns in operation preparing for its Nov. 15 opening day.

The National Weather Service attributed the snowfall to a weather system from the Gulf of Alaska, bringing cold temperatures and precipitation to the region. Another low-pressure system from Alaska is expected over the weekend, potentially bringing more rain and snow to Southern California, including the desert regions.

Mountain High aims to open on Nov. 15, pending favorable weather conditions. The resort is currently testing its snow-making systems and conducting repairs following the Bridge Fire. While some areas were damaged, most of the burn areas will not be visible to the public. One beginner chair, Discovery, sustained damage and will not be open until next year.

Despite the challenges, the resorts remain optimistic and are preparing for the winter season. Residents and visitors are hopeful for a snowy winter ahead, with ski enthusiasts eagerly awaiting the opening of the resorts for the upcoming season.
