Top Fears of Americans in 2024: Daily News

As Halloween approaches, Chapman University has released the findings of its annual Survey of American Fears, a study aimed at understanding the concerns and worries of Americans. The survey, now in its 10th year, asked over 1,000 individuals about 85 different fears, ranging from crime to natural disasters.

According to the survey results, Americans are increasingly afraid, with all of the top 10 fears being expressed by more than half of respondents. The fear of corrupt government officials remains the number one concern, followed by fears of loved ones becoming seriously ill or dying, nuclear war, terrorism, and running out of money. Recent world events have heightened concerns about war and terrorism, with six of the top fears relating to warfare.

The fear of running out of money saw a significant increase in ranking, moving up to the sixth spot on the list. Climate change fears have remained consistent over the years, with almost half of respondents stating they are afraid or very afraid of its effects.

Chapman University professors have published a book, “Fear Itself, The Causes and Consequences of Fear in America,” which explores how persistent fear can negatively impact individuals’ decision-making abilities, mental health, and communities. Despite the harmful effects of fear, politicians continue to leverage these fears for votes, while companies market products promising protection from exaggerated or imagined threats.
