Rep. Nancy Mace, the top Republican on a House subcommittee, threatened to issue a subpoena to the Biden administration as her panel investigates whether the government is limiting information on social media platforms before the November elections. Mace is seeking communications between the administration and social media companies like Meta, as she believes voters should be aware of any attempt to restrict information flow. Mace referred to the administration’s previous collaboration with social media platforms to flag misinformation, accusing them of manipulating content. However, the Supreme Court ruled that the administration did not illegally pressure social media companies to moderate content. Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg confirmed that the White House pressured the company to censor certain Covid-19 related posts, regretting the decision. Mace highlighted examples of attempts to suppress content, including the mislabeling of critical posts about the Biden-Harris administration as misinformation. The letter from Mace requests documents related to communications regarding information concealment on social media platforms from 2024 to present. Rep. Gerry Connolly, the ranking Democrat on the subcommittee, dismissed the subpoena threat as an overreaction, attributing the real problem to Republicans’ relationship with Elon Musk during the Trump campaign. The White House has not responded to the situation.
