LOS ANGELES – USC senior defensive end Jamil Muhammad, once a high school quarterback turned 260-pound defensive end, is chasing his first sack of the season. Despite leading USC in sacks the previous year, Muhammad has yet to record one in 2024. His team, USC, has struggled with pass rushing, with the defensive line contributing only 2.5 sacks out of the total 8 team sacks. Defensive Coordinator D’Anton Lynn is seeking ways to improve the pass rush, experimenting with blitz packages and utilizing linebackers and secondary players to create pressure on opposing quarterbacks.
In their recent game against Maryland, linebacker Easton Mascarenas-Arnold and safety Kamari Ramsey each recorded sacks, showing signs of improvement in the pass rush department. Lynn continues to mix up the defense and provide opportunities for different players to step up and make an impact. With underperforming defensive linemen and promising newcomers like Kameryn Fountain, USC is focused on finding the right formula to disrupt opposing offenses.
As USC heads into the second half of the season, the pressure is on to improve their pass rush and finish games strong. Lynn’s strategic approach and willingness to adapt to different situations will be crucial in turning around their performance in the pass rushing department. With the team’s fate hanging in the balance, USC is determined to find success on the defensive side of the ball and create more opportunities to pressure opposing quarterbacks.
