A family in Rancho Bernardo has filed a harassment complaint against Assembly candidate Carl DeMaio, requesting a restraining order. The complaint, brought to the San Diego Superior Court, alleges constant harassment from DeMaio and his husband, Jonathan Hale. The family claims that DeMaio and Hale make life miserable for them, dictate what plants they can have, threaten their kids, and peer at them, among other issues. However, a judge denied the restraining order, stating that the family was not in danger.
The dispute has brought up questions about DeMaio’s residency, as he claims to live in Fallbrook within the 75th Assembly District but court documents suggest he resides in Rancho Bernardo. This has raised concerns as his residency is necessary to run for the Assembly District 75 seat. DeMaio’s spokesperson asserts that he has two properties and is at the Rancho Bernardo home frequently to record his podcast.
Neighbors who previously led the homeowners association in the area mention that the dispute may have stemmed from the family not following proper procedures for landscaping work and often felt surprised by their actions. Despite claims made by the Zamanian family in the court filing, DeMaio’s spokesperson maintains that the homeowners association sides with DeMaio in the dispute.
While the dispute continues to escalate, with allegations of trespassing, destruction of property, and threats, the family denies political motivations in the conflict. They claim to be lifelong Republicans and have no knowledge of DeMaio’s prominence or his Assembly race. The situation remains ongoing as the question of DeMaio’s residency and the neighbor dispute remain at the forefront.
