Two female aviators from California, Lt Cdr Lyndsay P Evans and Lt Serena N Wileman, tragically died in a fighter-jet crash near Mount Rainier. Evans, part of an all-female flyover team, joined the navy to serve her country. Wileman, who joined the Zapper squadron in 2021, earned several military commendations.
The Navy declared the aviators dead and switched to recovery operations after locating the wreckage in a remote area. The cause of the crash is under investigation. The Growler aircraft involved in the crash, produced in 2008, has been crucial in global operations.
Governor Jay Inslee granted the Navy’s request for 24/7 security at the site. US Senator Patty Murray expressed her condolences, praising Evans and Wileman for their trailblazing careers and service to the country.
The Navy is focused on recovering debris and planning long-term salvage efforts. Cmdr Timothy Warburton of the squadron expressed sorrow at the loss and highlighted the need to support the families of the aviators and the Growler community.
Evans and Wileman have left a lasting impact on the Navy, breaking barriers and paving the way for future female aviators. The loss of these two dedicated service members has been deeply felt by the Navy and the nation as a whole.
