Two dead, 309 rescued following severe flooding in New Mexico

Severe flooding in Roswell, New Mexico, caused by record rainfall, has led to two deaths and 309 rescues by the New Mexico National Guard. The flash flood left water levels high in the downtown area with roads closed. Meteorologists predict more rain and possible flash floods. Vehicles were swept away in floodwaters, and authorities set up a shelter for displaced residents at the fairgrounds. Chaves County Sheriff Mike Herrington was seen standing on his vehicle surrounded by water, necessitating rescue. The Guard remains on duty to assist with search and rescue operations, using tactical vehicles capable of driving in deep water. The National Weather Service reported that 5.78 inches of rain fell in Roswell, breaking a daily record set in 1901. The Guard will continue to support Roswell as needed, working alongside other partner agencies to ensure the safety of residents.
