A House task force investigating the assassination attempt on former President Donald Trump during a rally on July 13 found a lack of planning and coordination between the Secret Service and local law enforcement. The report stated that there were missed opportunities for law enforcement officers to engage with the shooter, Thomas Matthew Crooks, before the incident occurred. Fragmented lines of communication allowed Crooks to climb onto the roof of a building and fire shots at the rally stage and crowd, resulting in one fatality and multiple injuries. The report highlighted the failure of information to reach the Secret Service command post in a timely manner, despite Crooks being under scrutiny by state and local partners for approximately 40 minutes. The report also criticized the lack of coordination among law enforcement agencies in the lead-up to the event, with the Secret Service not participating in briefings held by other agencies. The task force is continuing to conduct interviews and investigate the incident, as well as a separate alleged assassination attempt against Trump in Florida in September. The panel has requested information from federal agencies involved in the investigations. The Secret Service has not yet responded to requests for comment on the report.
