Republican candidates have yet to enter California’s upcoming gubernatorial race – Daily News

The race to replace California Governor Gavin Newsom is heating up, with a field of Democratic candidates vying for the position. Newsom, who will soon be leaving office, has faced criticism during his tenure, but his potential successors have failed to make a significant impact in the race so far.

Candidates like Toni Atkins, Betty Yee, Tony Thurmond, Lt. Gov. Eleni Kounalakis, and ex-Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa lack the name recognition and the experience in public policy to stand out in the crowded field. The absence of any prominent Republican candidates in the race underscores the state GOP’s lack of influence in California politics.

The Republican Party’s focus on the “Make America Great Again” ideology, championed by former President Donald Trump, has not resonated with California voters. Candidates who align themselves with Trump, like 2018 gubernatorial candidate John Cox, have faced defeats by wide margins in the state.

As the gubernatorial race continues to unfold, the lack of substantial differences among the candidates suggests that California may be in for another round of Democratic leadership in the state Capitol. With Newsom’s impending departure, the state is left with a Republican Party that is struggling to make an impact at the state level.
