Two candidates apply for open position on Del Mar City Council – San Diego Union-Tribune

The Del Mar City Council is in the process of appointing a new council member to fill the seat left by Dwight Worden, who resigned last month due to health concerns. With the council split on which candidate to appoint, they will meet again on Oct. 21 to make a decision. Two original candidates applied, but one has since withdrawn, leaving Finance Committee member Jeff Sturgis, Planning Commissioner Jas Grewal, and attorney/mediator Nicole Gesher as the remaining options. The city has 60 days from Worden’s resignation to make an appointment or hold a special election, with a vacancy potentially causing complications in council decisions. Some council members support a special election if a decision cannot be reached, while others want to avoid the cost. The council’s next regularly scheduled election is in November 2026. The city is currently accepting applications and will make a decision on the appointment at their upcoming meeting.
