Democrats improve election enthusiasm, though two important groups still fall behind

The latest NBC News poll shows that Democrats have caught up to Republicans in terms of enthusiasm for the upcoming election, with 77% of Democrats and 79% of Republicans expressing high interest. This is an improvement for Democrats from previous polls, but overall, the percentage of registered voters with high interest in the election is the lowest since 2004, except for 2016. The Democratic base, including Black voters and young voters, is showing lower levels of enthusiasm compared to previous cycles. The percentage of Black voters with high interest has dropped from 80-90% in past cycles to 64% now, while the percentage of voters ages 18 to 34 with high interest has decreased from 60% or higher in past cycles to 49% now. This poses a challenge for Democrats as they try to rev up turnout for a close race between Vice President Kamala Harris and former President Donald Trump. Despite the overall increase in enthusiasm for Democrats, the party will need to work on engaging key parts of their base to ensure a strong turnout in the upcoming election.
