Daily News: World leaders consider next moves as Russia repatriates 500 deceased soldiers to Ukraine

In a significant gesture, Russia has returned the bodies of 501 Ukrainian soldiers who were killed in action during the ongoing conflict in Ukraine. The soldiers were mostly from the eastern Donetsk region, particularly around the city of Avdiivka. Ukraine’s Coordination Headquarters for the Treatment of Prisoners of War announced that law enforcement agencies and forensic experts will identify the victims for their families to bury.

The war in Ukraine has resulted in tens of thousands of casualties on both sides, with no official figures available. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has revealed parts of his ‘victory plan’ aimed at ending the war through negotiations. Western partners are considering this proposal, including a formal invitation into NATO, though this has been a point of contention.

Russian President Vladimir Putin has expressed a willingness to enter talks and has acknowledged peace proposals from China and Brazil. However, he remains firm on the annexed Ukrainian territories. Meanwhile, reports have surfaced that North Korea has sent troops to support Russia against Ukraine, with thousands of soldiers training in Russia to join the fight.

The conflict in Ukraine continues despite world leaders discussing their next steps. Recently, Ukraine reported intercepting 135 drones sent by Russia in one of the largest drone barrages of the war, highlighting the ongoing military actions. The return of the soldiers’ bodies is a somber reminder of the toll the conflict has taken on both sides as efforts towards peace negotiations remain ongoing.
