Renaissance Arts Academy in Glassell Park, a public charter school serving predominantly Latino, Black, and Asian students, has been recognized as a National Blue Ribbon School by the U.S. Department of Education. The school, which opened in 2002 with 60 students and now has 454 students from pre-kindergarten to 12th grade, boasts above-average test scores and a student-teacher ratio of 16 to 1.
Despite being located in a working-class community in Los Angeles, Renaissance Arts Academy stands out with its unique approach to education. Classes are taught in mixed-grade settings in a renovated warehouse, where students learn in an open space with industrial ducts and track lighting. While unconventional, this method has proven successful, with 76% of students proficient in math and 79% proficient in reading.
The school emphasizes arts education, with students choosing between classical music or modern dance from third grade onwards. There are no sports or proms, but students partake in an annual theatrical performance. Additionally, every student participates in accelerated academics and disciplined arts training, leading to well-rounded graduates who pursue various paths post-graduation.
Renaissance Arts Academy’s recognition as a Blue Ribbon School highlights its commitment to academic excellence and closing opportunity gaps among student subgroups. The school’s unique environment, where teachers are viewed as advisors and students are referred to as scholars, fosters a sense of community and support. As one of 30 California schools to receive this honor, Renaissance Arts Academy continues to set a standard for inclusive and outstanding learning environments.
