Jack Epstein, a renowned high school football coach known for mentoring NFL stars Warren Moon and Rod Martin during their time at Hamilton High in the 1970s, passed away at his home in Redondo Beach at the age of 91. Epstein began his coaching career at Hamilton in 1967 and helped develop Moon, who would later become a Hall of Fame quarterback. He also coached Martin, a linebacker for USC and the Raiders, who played under Epstein at Hamilton.
Following his time at Hamilton, Epstein coached at Narbonne for six years and later at Palisades for seven years before retiring in 1992. Last year, a group of Epstein’s former players gathered to celebrate his 90th birthday and express their gratitude for the impact he had on their lives. Friend Joe Saltzman noted that Epstein was instrumental in changing the lives of his players through his coaching.
Epstein is survived by his wife of 67 years, Barbara, as well as three children, six grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren. His legacy lives on through the players he coached and the impact he had on their lives both on and off the field. Epstein’s contribution to the world of football and the lives he touched will be remembered for years to come.
