Daily News: Cleveland advances to ALCS with Lane Thomas’ grand slam against Detroit

Cleveland Guardians secured a 7-3 victory over the Detroit Tigers in Game 5 of the AL Division Series, with Lane Thomas hitting a grand slam off Tarik Skubal to seal the win. The Guardians will now face the New York Yankees in the AL Championship Series, marking the seventh playoff matchup between the two teams.

Despite expectations, the Guardians, under first-year manager Stephen Vogt, clinched the AL Central title and are now aiming to end their World Series title drought dating back to 1948. They had to overcome the challenge of facing Skubal, who had not given up a run in 24 consecutive innings before Cleveland tagged him for five runs in the fifth inning.

Thomas, who had five RBIs in the game, came through with a crucial grand slam, helping the Guardians secure the win. The team’s resilient and scrappy style, known as “Guards Ball,” was on full display as they battled against the Tigers.

After their victory, Vogt expressed confidence that the team was not done and was looking forward to facing the Yankees in the upcoming ALCS. The Guardians’ success this season has been a pleasant surprise, winning 92 games under Vogt’s leadership.

The Tigers, who made an impressive late-season push to earn a postseason berth, fell short against the Guardians in the ALDS. Manager A.J. Hinch praised his team for their effort and resilience throughout the season but acknowledged the disappointment of the abrupt end to their playoff run.

As the Guardians prepare to face the Yankees in the ALCS, the team is riding high on their unexpected success this season and eager to continue their postseason journey.
