California lawmakers are entering the final phase of deliberations on various bills that were introduced throughout the legislative session. Among those bills, a select few have emerged as laws, including several notable ones introduced by San Diego senators and assembly members. State Sen. Catherine Blakespear passed a bill to ban most plastic grocery bags statewide, replacing them with reusable or paper bags made from at least 50% recycled materials by 2028. She also passed laws to improve coastal rail line management and speed up development of accessory dwelling units in coastal areas.
Assemblymember David Alvarez passed legislation to upgrade stormwater systems and prevent floods in San Diego by expediting stormwater work and channel maintenance. State Sen. Seve Padilla established a Salton Sea Conservancy to restore the blighted inland lake, with significant funding attached. Assemblymember Akilah Weber passed anti-discrimination laws related to hairstyles and authored a law requiring California to apologize for its role in slavery and racial discrimination.
Assemblymember Brian Maienshchein passed two gun control laws, one preventing certain individuals from possessing firearms during court-ordered diversion, and the other authorizing law enforcement to confiscate and destroy illegally carried firearms. Assemblymember Chris Ward passed laws prohibiting doxing, adding “hate littering” to state civil rights code, and establishing guardrails around active shooter drills conducted by schools. These laws aim to address various issues including environmental concerns, discrimination, and public safety.
