The Laguna Hills DMV office is set to close on October 18, leaving South Orange County residents to use the San Clemente DMV next year. A reader, Pat Kenner from Laguna Niguel, is concerned about long lines and lack of parking at the new location. He is wondering if he can renew his driver’s license early by taking an eye exam and getting a new photo at the soon-to-be-closed Laguna Hills DMV office.
The DMV typically allows license renewal processes to begin within 90 days of expiration when done online, and within 60 days if done in person. Exceptions can be made on a case-by-case basis. Pat may have to wait until closer to his expiration date to renew his license early.
Honk also shares information about changes in license renewal policies for California drivers over the age of 70. They no longer need to take the knowledge test or eLearning session when renewing if their driving record is clean.
In response to another reader’s question, it is revealed that only 55 out of over 2,100 California Highway Patrol patrol vehicles have automated license-plate readers. These devices have been successful in recovering stolen vehicles and making arrests. The CHP’s program with the license-plate readers began in 2005, and other police agencies and cities also use them. Los Angeles, for example, has 1,500 readers on squad cars, with more being added in response to crime statistics.
