New Lesbian Bar, Dani’s Queer Bar, Establishes Itself in Boston after Decades Without One in Beantown

Dani’s Queer Bar, the first lesbian bar in Boston in decades, opened its doors last month, joining a trend of new bars for queer women across the country. Founder Thais Rocha, who hosted parties for queer women prior to opening the bar, aimed to create a space for Sapphic, trans, and non-binary community members. With the help of a grant from the city, Dani’s Queer Bar finally opened after permitting delays on September 12.

The opening of Dani’s Queer Bar was met with excitement from the community, as it provides a dedicated space for queer women and trans and nonbinary individuals to gather in Boston. Before Dani’s, there hadn’t been a lesbian bar in the city for at least two decades, reflecting a national trend of declining lesbian bars since the 1980s due to gentrification, misogyny in small-business loans, and the gender pay gap. However, there has been somewhat of a resurgence, with over a dozen new Sapphic spaces opening since 2020.

The importance of lesbian bars as a shelter, community space, and place for like-minded individuals was highlighted by those who visited Dani’s, such as Stevie Dickie and Renee Gannon. Kristen Porter, a leader in Boston’s lesbian community, emphasized the significance of Dani’s providing a permanent space for LGBTQ patrons to gather, noting the continued demand for lesbian gatherings in Boston. Overall, the opening of Dani’s Queer Bar signifies progress towards inclusivity and visibility for the LGBTQ community in Boston.
