Elephants flee from flash floods in Thailand

Elephant Nature Park in Thailand has issued a plea for help after about 100 elephants were evacuated due to severe flooding. The sanctuary, near the city of Chiang Mai, released videos and pictures showing elephants wading through deep floodwaters, with some swept away and two missing. The flood, caused by Typhoon Yagi, caused significant damage to the park’s trees and grasslands. The staff worked tirelessly to evacuate all animals to safety, but nine elephants, mostly wild males, were still stranded. Food and other necessities had to be sent by boat as the roads were cut off. The rescued elephants are being relocated to the mountains for safety. The park called for assistance and more volunteers to join the rescue operation, as the area was entirely flooded and inaccessible by trucks. Furthermore, the park lost electricity and telephone coverage. Severe flooding and landslides in northern Thailand in recent weeks, caused by Typhoon Yagi, have killed hundreds of people. Established in 2003, Elephant Nature Park is a sanctuary for elephants rescued from the logging and tourism industries. The park is asking for donations of boats, small animal cages, and waterproof tarps to aid in the evacuation efforts.
