Angel City Football Club faces a setback in their late-season playoff push after being deducted three points by the NWSL for a salary-cap violation. The investigation found that the club had undisclosed side letters with players, causing them to exceed the salary cap by $50,000 for four weeks in the 2024 season. In addition to the point deduction, Angel City was fined $200,000 and their president and CEO, as well as their general manager, have been suspended from player transactions for the remainder of the year.
This deduction drops Angel City to 12th place with 19 points, instead of 22, putting them nine points behind the final playoff spot with four games left in the season. The franchise, valued at $250 million, recently saw Disney CEO Bob Iger and his wife Willow Bay become the new controlling owners.
In other news, 17-year-old Kennedy Fuller has been selected for the U.S. U-17 World Cup roster. The tournament begins on October 16th in the Dominican Republic, with Fuller being one of four professionals on the team. Fuller, who won the Golden Ball at the CONCACAF Women’s U-17 Championship, is praised by Angel City coach Becki Tweed for her selection.
Angel City FC will face Seattle Reign FC on Friday at Lumen Field, with the game being broadcast on Amazon Prime Video.
