Voting Opens for Alaska’s Fat Bear Week Following Fatal Attack on Contestant

Voting is underway in Katmai National Park’s Fat Bear Week, an annual celebration of the fattest bears as they prepare for hibernation. The competition was delayed after a bear killed one of the competitors, captured live on webcams set up in the park. The bracket includes 12 bears competing to be crowned the fattest of the season, with voting taking place over seven days. The bears bulk up on salmon and snacks before hibernating, with some increasing their weight by more than 50% in only six months. This year’s competition features eight bears in the first round, with notable matchups including last year’s winner Bear #128, also known as Grazer, and two-time champion Bear #747. Other contenders include Bear #903, a newcomer, and Bear #151, a large male nicknamed Walker. The winner will be declared on Fat Bear Tuesday, with voting open until then. The contest highlights the harsh realities of nature, where survival is dependent on accumulating enough fat to endure months without food during hibernation.
