One Doctor Charged in Matthew Perry’s Death Pleads Guilty

Dr. Mark Chavez, one of two doctors charged in the investigation of the death of actor Matthew Perry, pleaded guilty in a federal court in Los Angeles to conspiring to distribute the surgical anesthetic ketamine. This comes after Perry’s fatal overdose last year, with prosecutors offering lesser charges to Chavez and two others in exchange for their cooperation to go after two other targets they believe are more responsible for Perry’s death. These targets are another doctor, Dr. Salvador Plasencia, and an alleged dealer known as the “ketamine queen” of Los Angeles, Jasveen Sangha.

Chavez turned over his passport and surrendered his medical license as part of his bond conditions. Perry’s assistant and a friend have also admitted to their roles in obtaining and distributing ketamine. Both Plasencia and Sangha, however, have pleaded not guilty.

Chavez admitted to obtaining ketamine from his former clinic and a wholesaler by submitting fraudulent prescriptions. He faces up to 10 years in prison after pleading guilty.

Perry, known for his role as Chandler Bing on the hit sitcom Friends, struggled with addiction for years. He had been using ketamine for off-label depression treatment, and sought more of the drug illegally leading up to his death.

The investigation is ongoing, with prosecutors focused on holding those directly responsible for supplying Perry with the lethal dose of ketamine accountable.
