New Guidelines for Conducting Active Shooter Drills in Schools

A new bill signed by California Gov. Gavin Newsom, AB 1858, regulates how schools conduct active-shooter drills, prohibiting the use of simulated gunfire and requiring drills to be age-appropriate, with parental notification. The bill aims to reduce anxiety and trauma for students during these drills. In a separate incident, Rancho Santa Fe school board member Paul Seitz was censured after allegedly attacking a fellow board member’s husband. The incident prompted the board to take action publicly, addressing concerns from the community. San Diego Unified’s school choice enrollment window is now open, allowing parents to choose a school for their child. Workshops are being held to help parents navigate the enrollment process.

There is also a push to ban or limit cell phone use by students on school campuses, with state legislation requiring districts to develop plans by 2026. Additional news includes an audit of nonprofit foundations, an investigation into sexual harassment allegations against former San Diego Unified Superintendent Lamont Jackson, and ongoing challenges with bringing air conditioning to all classrooms despite significant funding. San Dieguito Union High School students have raised concerns about financial dealings at a nonprofit foundation at their school, leading to further scrutiny. These developments highlight the ongoing efforts to improve safety, effectiveness, and accountability in San Diego’s education system.
