Founder of Kick it Out, Herman Ouseley, passes away at 79 years old

The world of football is mourning the loss of anti-racism campaigner and founder of Kick it Out, Lord Herman Ouseley, who passed away at the age of 79 after a brief illness. Lord Ouseley dedicated 25 years to leading Kick it Out in its mission to combat racism and discrimination in football, leaving behind a lasting legacy in the sport. His vision led to the first true structural change in football to address discrimination, making fans and participants more aware of how to challenge it.

In addition to his work with Kick it Out, Lord Ouseley served as a member of the House of Lords and as the chair and chief executive of the Commission for Racial Equality. His contributions were recognized with a knighthood in 1997 and 13 honorary degrees from universities across the UK. Former footballer and anti-racism campaigner Troy Townsend paid tribute to Lord Ouseley, expressing gratitude for his impact on football and society.

The anti-racism body Race Council Cymru also mourned Lord Ouseley’s passing, describing him as a remarkable man and a giant in the field of race equity. In 2018, he was honored with an Icon award in Wales, where his contributions to education, anti-racism, and local government developments were celebrated. Lord Ouseley’s legacy will continue to inspire future generations to fight against discrimination in football and society as a whole.
