AI strike negotiator urges the EU and the US to stay vigilant against Hollywood writer unrest

The lead creative industry negotiator from Hollywood, Ellen Stutzman, has raised concerns about the potential impact of the EU AI Act on the creative industry. Stutzman, who led negotiations during a 148-day strike by Hollywood writers, warns that there may be too few regulatory guardrails on companies using AI tools, such as large language models like ChatGPT. She emphasizes the need for transparency, consent, and fair remuneration in the use of AI in creative work.

The strike led by the Writers Guild of America West (WGA) against producers united in the Alliance of Motion Picture Producers (AMPTP) sought to protect creative work from being replaced by AI-generated content. Stutzman highlights the importance of ensuring that AI tools are used to assist, rather than replace, human creativity.

The EU’s AI Act, which regulates AI models based on the risks they pose to society, entered into force in August. However, the full impact of the Act remains to be seen. Lawmaker Brando Benifei has called for more specific rules on AI and the workplace to protect original content and address the use of copyrighted works by AI systems.

The European Parliament will set up a monitoring group to track developments related to the AI Act in member states and by the Commission. With the rapid changes in technology, policymakers at both EU and national levels need to keep up to ensure the protection of workers and original content in the face of AI innovation.
