The New York Mets continue their thrilling week with an 8-4 victory over the Milwaukee Brewers in the National League Wild Card Series opener. Mark Vientos’ tiebreaking two-run single in the fifth inning was the highlight of a five-run inning for the Mets. The win puts the Mets one game away from advancing to the NL Division Series.
The Mets earned their playoff spot with a late rally in a doubleheader against the Braves on Monday, showing their tenacity and determination. The Game 1 winner in the Wild Card Series has gone on to advance in each of the eight series since the format was introduced in 2022.
Jesse Winker and pinch-hitter J.D. Martinez contributed with two RBIs each for the Mets. Milwaukee’s Brice Turang had a strong game, going 3 for 4, while the Brewers bullpen faltered in the fifth inning after a strong performance by starter Freddy Peralta.
New York starter Luis Severino settled in after a shaky start, allowing four runs in six innings for the win. The Brewers struggled to generate offense after the fifth inning, as Mets pitchers retired the next 17 batters to secure the victory.
The Mets will look to close out the series in Game 2 with left-hander Sean Manaea on the mound, while the Brewers will turn to Frankie Montas to try and even the series. Both teams are eager to advance to the next round and continue their quest for a World Series title.
