Uganda has strict abortion laws which criminalize both women seeking abortions and doctors providing them. The ambiguity in the laws leaves many women resorting to unsafe procedures, resulting in deaths. Doctors who provide post-abortion care also face ostracism.
Moses Odongo, a public health advocate, recently experienced a personal loss when his cousin Christine died attempting to terminate a pregnancy. This tragic event has motivated him to advocate for safe abortion practices and educate communities about the dangers of unsafe abortions.
International Safe Abortion Day in Uganda has highlighted the need for clearer laws and increased access to safe abortion services. Activists and organizations have been working to provide information and resources to vulnerable communities, including sex workers.
Despite opposition from religious and political leaders, activists and healthcare providers in Uganda are determined to continue their fight for safe abortion practices. They believe that clear laws and access to safe abortions are necessary to prevent unnecessary deaths and protect women’s health and rights.
