Italian President Sergio Mattarella praised the strong relationship between Rome and Berlin during a three-day state visit to Germany. Speaking alongside German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier, Mattarella emphasized the importance of a united EU to address global challenges. He also warned against the dangers of political populism and stressed that peace in Ukraine should not come at the cost of surrendering dignity and international law.
During his visit, Mattarella engaged in talks with German Chancellor Olaf Scholz to discuss European issues. The presidents are set to travel to Cologne and Bonn to attend a conference on climate change cooperation between Germany and Italy, followed by a service marking the 80th anniversary of the Marzabotto massacre, where 770 Italian civilians were killed by Waffen SS troops during World War II.
Steinmeier expressed gratitude for the opportunity to attend the commemoration and acknowledged the deep wounds left by the atrocities committed in Italy during the war. The visit symbolizes the strong bonds between the two countries and their commitment to remembering historical tragedies while working towards a more united and peaceful future. The presence of the presidents in Marzabotto highlights the importance of honoring the victims and learning from the past to prevent such atrocities from happening again.
