Israeli airstrikes across Lebanon have resulted in the deaths of dozens of people, including 29 reported casualties in a single attack in the Bekaa valley. The Israeli military claimed to have killed the head of Hezbollah’s aerial unit in a strike in Beirut, while Hezbollah launched missiles at Israeli territory.
Despite international calls for a ceasefire, including a proposal from the United States and France for a 21-day halt to hostilities, Israeli officials have rejected these options. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu stated that Israel will continue to strike Hezbollah until its objectives are met.
The recent escalation in violence has forced over 90,000 people in Lebanon to flee their homes, with over 600 killed since Monday. The conflict marks the deadliest week of hostilities between Israel and Hezbollah in recent years. Israel’s military focus has shifted from Gaza to its northern border, with the goal of returning displaced civilians to their homes in the north.
Israel has also claimed to have targeted and killed several top leaders of Hezbollah’s military. There are growing fears of a potential ground assault on Lebanon, with the Israeli army’s Chief of Staff telling troops to be prepared for a ground operation.
The situation in Lebanon remains tense as both sides continue to engage in airstrikes and missile attacks, with no immediate end to the conflict in sight. International efforts to broker a ceasefire have so far been unsuccessful, as the violence and casualties continue to rise.
