Independent Forge Co., a family-run metal forging company in Orange, that manufactures aluminum parts for Boeing’s 737 Max aircraft, is facing challenges due to a strike by more than 33,000 machinists. The strike is causing ripple effects across the aerospace industry, impacting machine tool and metal shops, as well as a complex supply chain worldwide.
Andrew Flores, president of Independent Forge, expressed concern over the potential devastating impact of the strike on their business. The company, which employs 25 workers, has already laid off five employees and faces the possibility of further layoffs or even closure if the strike persists.
The strike, initiated by the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers District 751, is affecting Independent Forge’s supply chain, causing concern for the company’s financial stability. In addition, a separate strike at a general aviation unit owned by Textron Corp. in Kansas is further complicating the situation for Independent Forge.
The strike is disrupting the production of aluminum parts used in Boeing aircraft, including the 737 Max, which accounts for a significant portion of Independent Forge’s revenue. The company is also facing challenges with delayed payments and slowing orders from major subcontractors in the aerospace industry.
