Curt Miller has decided to leave his position as head coach of the Sparks after the WNBA franchise failed to make the playoffs for the fourth year in a row, marking his second season with the team. The decision, described as a mutual agreement to part ways, was announced by the team on Tuesday. The Sparks have already started the search for a new coach after Miller led the team to a record of 25-55 in his two seasons.
Miller, with a coaching record of 165-141 in the WNBA, previously coached the Connecticut Sun and was named Coach of the Year in 2017. Under his leadership, the Sun made it to the WNBA Finals in 2019 and 2022. He also served as the Sun’s general manager and was the first openly gay male coach in college or professional basketball. During his time with the Sparks, player Dearica Hamby received All-Star honors and The Associated Press Most Improved Player award, while Rickea Jackson made the AP All-Rookie Team.
In response to his departure, Miller expressed gratitude to the Sparks organization for the opportunity to rebuild the team and create a positive culture within the locker room. He believes that the team is now positioned for success and wishes the players the best for the upcoming 2025 season. The Sparks are now focused on finding a new coach to lead them in the future.
