The San Diego Padres pulled off a stunning triple play to secure a 4-2 victory over the Los Angeles Dodgers. The win against the National League’s top team allowed the Padres to clinch a playoff berth and close the NL West lead to just two games. Padres third baseman Manny Machado credited divine intervention from former owner Peter Seidler, who passed away last year, for their miraculous play.
Facing the Dodgers in the bottom of the ninth inning, the Padres turned a game-ending triple play with Shohei Ohtani waiting in the on-deck circle – one of the best hitters in baseball. This rare feat has only occurred 28 times in MLB history and marks the 10th triple play in Padres history.
The victory was supported by solid pitching from Michael King and relief from the Padres bullpen, as well as key hits from Jake Cronenworth and Xander Bogaerts. Despite some late-game drama, closer Robert Suarez held on to secure the win.
After the game, the Padres celebrated their achievement with a wild clubhouse party. Right fielder Fernando Tatis Jr. emphasized the team’s unity and determination to keep pushing forward. The Padres are determined to honor Seidler’s memory and continue their success as they head towards the playoffs.
