Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy met with US business representatives to seek investments in rebuilding the country’s energy system damaged by Russian air attacks. The focus was on preparing the energy system for winter to prevent power outages. Zelenskyy proposed special incentives to US companies as part of Ukraine’s victory plan.
The Russian air strikes targeting Ukraine’s energy infrastructure began in February 2022 and have continued throughout the war. The attacks have left Ukrainian cities without power for hours at a time. Ukraine considers the targeting of its energy system a war crime, with the International Criminal Court issuing arrest warrants for Russian officials involved.
The UN Human Rights Monitoring Mission in Ukraine stated that Russian air strikes likely violate international humanitarian law, with experts predicting significant power outages this winter. The International Energy Agency and European Commission have also expressed concerns, with the EU pledging a loan of up to 35 billion euros to help Ukraine repair its energy grid.
The proposal of special incentives to US companies by Zelenskyy aims to accelerate the reconstruction of Ukraine’s energy system and ensure adequate heating capacity as winter approaches. The international community continues to condemn the Russian attacks on Ukraine’s energy infrastructure and work towards supporting the country’s efforts to recover.
