A suspicious package containing unbleached flour was received at the California secretary of state’s headquarters in Sacramento, adding to a series of similar incidents across the country. Election officials in at least 15 states have reported receiving suspicious packages, though the source of the Sacramento package remains unknown. Fortunately, testing revealed that the material was non-hazardous and only contained flour.
The FBI and U.S. Postal Inspection Service are investigating the incidents in multiple states, which include Alaska, Colorado, Georgia, and Missouri among others. Fortunately, there have been no reports of injuries caused by the packages. This is not the first time election offices have been targeted with suspicious mail, as similar incidents occurred in November with letters containing fentanyl.
These incidents come as early voting begins for the upcoming November election, with former President Trump’s claims of voter fraud amplifying scrutiny on the election process. The National Association of Secretaries of State has condemned the suspicious mailings and assassination attempts against Trump, emphasizing that political violence has no place in democracy.
California Secretary of State Shirley Weber is working closely with state and federal law enforcement to monitor any threats to election workers. As authorities continue to investigate, election officials nationwide are being urged to take extra precautions when handling mail at their facilities.
