Major milestones achieved in environmental efforts to clean and protect beaches – Daily News

Environmental milestones in California are being celebrated this year, with California Coastal Cleanup Day, the Surfrider Foundation, and Orange County Coastkeeper all reaching significant anniversaries. California Coastal Cleanup Day, which is marking its 40th year, has seen over 1.6 million volunteers remove more than 26 million pounds of trash from beaches and waterways. The Surfrider Foundation, now 40 years old, has successfully fought to protect iconic surf breaks and continues to advocate for policy change. Orange County Coastkeeper, celebrating 25 years, was founded to protect water quality along the coast and has expanded its efforts to include inland waterways.

This year, California Coastal Cleanup Day will take place on September 21, with more than 750 cleanups planned across the state. Surfrider aims to launch a climate action program and continues its work to clean up beaches and advocate for environmental policies. As for Orange County Coastkeeper, they are commemorating their anniversary with cleanup events and a “Toast to the Coast” celebration on September 26.

These organizations were all started by passionate individuals who recognized the need to protect California’s coast and waterways from pollution and other threats. Through their dedicated efforts and the support of volunteers, significant progress has been made in preserving and restoring the state’s valuable natural resources. The upcoming Coastal Cleanup Day is an opportunity for Californians to come together, take action, and contribute to the ongoing conservation efforts that have made a positive impact on the environment over the past several decades.
