Iranian hackers sent unsolicited emails containing stolen material from Donald Trump’s campaign to individuals associated with Joe Biden’s campaign. This was part of an effort to undermine confidence in the electoral process and stir discord. The FBI, the Office of the Director of National Intelligence, and the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency have confirmed Iran’s involvement in these hacking attempts. The agencies also warned of similar efforts from Russia and China. The Trump campaign suggested that Iran was trying to support Kamala Harris as they believed Trump would be tougher on them. Trump claimed that Harris was illegally spying on him and referred to the situation as the “Iran, Iran, Iran case,” but the Harris campaign denied any involvement in the hacking. Law enforcement agencies have been tracking the stolen information from the Trump campaign and have contacted individuals associated with the Biden campaign who received the unsolicited emails, which appeared to be phishing attempts. Google’s Threat Analysis Group reported that an Iranian hacker group targeted both the Trump and Biden-Harris campaigns in a phishing operation. The Justice Department plans to file criminal charges in connection with the hacking of Trump’s campaign, although Iran has denied any involvement. Overall, there are concerns about foreign interference in U.S. elections and efforts to exacerbate divisions in society for their own benefit.
