Acclaimed stage actress Mary-Louise Parker takes on a leading film role in “Omni Loop” directed by Bernardo Britto, where she portrays a scientist with a black hole in her heart, who can travel back in time five days. The movie follows her quest to fix her past and heart with the help of a struggling young scientist played by Ayo Edebiri. Opening at the Laemmle Glendale and on VOD, Britto and Parker discuss the film in a recent interview.
The idea for the movie came from Britto’s contemplation on life and death, influenced by personal experiences. Despite the common theme of time loops in films, Britto aimed to subvert audience expectations by focusing on the character’s choice to go back in time. For Parker, who had primarily focused on stage roles due to being a single mother, “Omni Loop” was one of the first projects she did for herself, drawn to Britto’s unique vision and artistic confidence. Their collaboration resulted in a deep understanding of the characters and storytelling nuances.
Parker shared her reluctance to watch her film performances and her dislike for post-production looping of lines, praising Britto for capturing authentic performances on set. Britto, on the other hand, emphasized the importance of giving actors ownership over their characters and performances. The film’s exploration of themes related to regret and acceptance prompted reflections on life for both Parker and Britto, highlighting the interconnectedness of past experiences with present opportunities. Despite the challenges and uncertainties of life, embracing the present moment remains essential. “Omni Loop” stands as a testament to the power of storytelling and the transformative impact of collaboration between artists.
