UN reports increased repression in Venezuela following Maduro’s re-election: Nicolas Maduro News

The aftermath of Nicolas Maduro’s contested re-election in Venezuela has been marred by a severe crackdown on opposition and protesters, resulting in 25 deaths and 2,400 arrests. A United Nations fact-finding mission highlighted the unprecedented wave of repression unleashed by the government, labeling it as one of the most acute human rights crises in recent history. Most of the deaths were caused by gunshot wounds, and many of those arrested, including children, were accused of terrorism and incitement to hatred.

Opposition candidate Edmundo Gonzalez’s supporters accused the governing party of electoral fraud, with Gonzalez himself seeking political asylum in Spain after a warrant was issued for his arrest. The US imposed sanctions on Venezuelan officials for their role in certifying Maduro’s victory. Maduro’s government, on the other hand, has blamed the deaths on the opposition, labeling protesters as extremists and fascists.

Allegations of forced disappearances, cruel treatment, and torture have increased since 2019, as per the fact-finding mission. The Venezuelan government has refused to cooperate with the mission, further exacerbating the situation. The deteriorating state of the rule of law in Venezuela has raised concerns globally, with the international community calling for an end to the crackdown and a restoration of human rights and democratic values in the country.
