Christian McCaffrey of the 49ers is placed on injured reserve

The San Francisco 49ers have placed All-Pro running back Christian McCaffrey on injured reserve due to lingering calf and Achilles tendon injuries, which means he will miss at least four more games after already sitting out the season opener. McCaffrey got hurt early in training camp and has experienced ongoing pain, leading to his absence. In his place, backup Jordan Mason had a strong performance with 28 carries for 147 yards and a touchdown in a recent victory over the New York Jets, earning him the starting spot for the upcoming game against Minnesota. McCaffrey, who had been healthy for the past two seasons after missing multiple games due to injuries with Carolina, will be replaced by Mason along with rookies Isaac Guerendo and Patrick Taylor Jr. on the active roster. The team has also elevated safety Tracy Walker III from the practice squad for the next game. McCaffrey led the NFL in yards from scrimmage last season and was tied for the most touchdowns, earning him the AP Offensive Player of the Year award. Now the 49ers will have to rely on their depth at the running back position in McCaffrey’s absence.
