EU naval mission rushes to rescue burning oil tanker in Red Sea

A European Union naval mission has launched a new attempt to salvage an oil tanker, the Sounion, in the Red Sea following attacks by Yemen’s Houthi rebels. The EU’s Operation Aspides is actively involved in creating a secure environment for the towing operation of the Greek-flagged vessel, which came under attack on August 21st. The ship, carrying 1 million barrels of crude oil, was later detonated by explosives planted by the rebels, raising concerns of a potential oil spill.

The Houthi rebels have targeted over 80 vessels with missiles and drones since the conflict in Gaza began in October, resulting in the sinking of multiple ships. The rebels claim to target ships connected to Israel, the U.S., or the U.K. to end Israel’s campaign against Hamas. However, many of the attacked vessels have little to no connection to the conflict, including those heading towards Iran.

The EU naval mission has been escorting ships involved in the salvage operation of the Sounion and facilitating a safe towing process. The crew of the tanker, consisting of Filipinos, Russians, and private security personnel, were safely evacuated to Djibouti by a French destroyer following the initial attack. The ongoing conflict in the region has led to heightened tensions and increased risks for maritime vessels in the Red Sea. The EU’s efforts to salvage the Sounion highlight the challenges faced by international actors in mitigating the impact of the escalating conflict on commercial shipping in the region.
